Ο πρόεδρος της FIFA, Τζιάνι Ινφαντίνο απέστειλε προσωπική επιστολή στην ΕΠΟ, προκειμένου να εκφράσει τα συλλυπητήρια του για τον Μίμη Παπαϊωάννου.
Το γεγονός ότι η φήμη του αείμνηστου Μίμη Παπαϊωάννου ξεπερνούσε τα σύνορα, ήταν γνωστό. Όπως επίσης ότι η Διεθνής Υπηρεσία Στατιστικής Ποδοσφαίρου (IFFHS) τον είχε αναδείξει κορυφαίο Έλληνα ποδοσφαιριστή του 20ου αιώνα.
Έτσι ο Ιταλός πρόεδρος της FIFA, Τζιάνι Ινφαντίνο έστειλε επιστολή στον ομότιμό του στην ΕΠΟ, Παναγιώτη Μπαλτάκο, για να εκφράσει με τον πλέον επίσημο τρόπο τις συλλυπητήριες ευχές του για το χαμό του διεθνή αρχηγού της ΑΕΚ.
Αναφέρεται μεταξύ άλλων στις συμμετοχές του εκλιπόντος στην Εθνική Ομάδα, στη Βέροια (!) από όπου ξεκίνησε την καριέρα του ο Παπαϊωάννου, στη μεγάλη του καριέρα στην ΑΕΚ και στους τίτλους που κατέκτησε με τη φανέλα της, όπως και για το φινάλε του στις ΗΠΑ, με την ομάδα του Παγκύπριου Νέας Υόρκης.

In memory of Dimitrios Papaioannou
Dear President,
I would like to express my sincerest and heartfelt condolences on the passing of former international player, Dimitrios Papaioannou. Words seem inadequate to express the sadness we feel for this loss.
During his career, Dimitrios “Mimis” Papaioannou was capped 61 times by Greece, scoring 21 goals. At club level, having started with Veria FC, he enjoyed a successful career with AEK Athens FC, where he stayed for almost two decades, and notably won five championship titles and three Greek Cups, before retiring after a last stint in the USA, with New York Pancyprian-Freedoms. After the end of his playing career, he notably took part, as assistant coach of the Greece national team, to the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the USA.
Legend of Greek football and of AEK Athens FC, considered as one of the greatest Greek footballers of all times, his legacy and trajectory on and off the pitch will not be forgotten, and he will be truly missed.
On behalf of the international football community, I wish to extend our deepest sympathy to the Hellenic Football Federation, and to Dimitrios Papaioannou’ family, friends and loved ones. Our thoughts are with all of you.
We hope that these memories and our words of support may help bring some peace and solace at this difficult time.
